I had an assignment about this at school about this an I found it really interesting, so i'll write about it here.
In the dictionary, beauty is defined as "the quality of being pleasing, especially to look at, or someone or something that gives great pleasure, especially when you look at it". But, as we all know, beauty is different for everyone.
In Mauritania, chubby women are considered beautiful because the more space you occupy, the more people see you and if men can see you they can get married with you. On the contrary, in many occidental countries being fat is not considered beautiful and models are so skinny it's actually worrying.
The Maori tribe in New Zealand gets tattoos o their chin and body to indicate social status. On the contrary, in Japan tattoos are not well seen because they are related to the mafia.
There are many examples like these, but the point is that around the world the concept of beauty changes. Beauty also changed a lot throughout the years, but that's another topic I can post about later.
Beauty standards have been a problem in many places, since some people become so focused in fitting in that they develop illnesses like anorexia or bulimia. It is important to understand that not everything we see on the the internet is true. We are all beautiful, even if we are different from the models we see in magazines.
What about you? What is considered beautiful in your country?
Here is the poster I had to make for my assignment:
